British Clarinettist & Composer

Mebrakh Haughton-Johnson is a British clarinettist and composer whose work explores classical tradition through contemporary voices and expressive depth. Trained at the Royal College of Music and The Juilliard School, and recognised by the Royal Philharmonic Society, he has performed internationally at venues including Carnegie Hall, Royal Albert Hall, and Wigmore Hall. Festival appearances include the Verbier Festival, the Edinburgh International Festival, the Adelaide Festival, and the Whittington International Chamber Music Festival.

Combining technical assurance with expressive freedom, his performances are shaped by the belief that classical music is a living art form — one that thrives through curiosity, dialogue, and connection with audiences.

About

"Audiences can expect an emotionally rich, genre-spanning experience that blends familiar masterpieces with bold modern voices. They’ll leave having discovered new sounds, new stories, and a deeper sense of how the clarinet can speak across cultures and eras."

- Mebrakh

From the concert halls of New York to the festival stages of Edinburgh, Adelaide, and beyond, Mebrakh's career is one of extraordinary range and intention. As a soloist, chamber musician and a long-standing voice within Chineke!, Europe's first majority Black and ethnically diverse professional orchestra, Mebrakh brings both rigour and soul to every room he enters.

He has given recitals at venues including St George's Bristol, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Harrogate International Festival. His recordings with Chineke! on Decca Records have reached audiences worldwide, alongside broadcast appearances on BBC Radio 3 and ABC Classic, Australia.

He has lent his voice to film, fashion, and the avant-garde, from a performance in Downton Abbey: A New Era to Tyler, The Creator's Louis Vuitton Men's Fashion Show in Paris.

Equally at home on stage, in the studio and in the classroom, Mebrakh is as committed to music's future as he is to its traditions. He champions underrepresented composers, mentors the next generation of musicians, and believes in the quiet, transformative power of a single note played with complete conviction.
